We provide health services here on our campus for basic medical care. The Piney Woods health clinic is located across from Zilpha Chandler Auditorium. Our medical staff includes a physician, licensed practical nurse, and a nurse practitioner. The school’s nurse is on duty Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Our nurse practitioner is on duty Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. Our doctor is on campus Monday mornings from 7 a.m. – 8 a.m. For student emergencies, the nurse can be contacted 24/7 by any employee.
All student medications (prescription or over the counter) are given to the nurse and/or to the residential faculty/staff and are documented as part of the students’ health record. Some students require daily medications, which are dispensed by the nurse, as needed. If a student’s illness requires a doctor’s care, the parent is called and the student is taken to Mendenhall Health Clinic or a local hospital/emergency room (with the parent’s/legal guardian’s approval).
There is no fee for visits to our Health Clinic; however, if the nature of the student’s illness is referred to a facility outside of Piney Woods, (clinic, hospital, specialty care, diagnostic services, or etc.) the parent/legal guardian will be notified and is responsible for the cost of these services, unless covered by their health insurance.
The School nurse approves and records all medical appointments. Whenever possible, appointments should be made well in advance to avoid conflicts with classes/school obligations.
Our annual Health Fair draws participants from across the South, including the Red Cross, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association and offers testing opportunities for the students and the community at large. But your health is not just a matter of treatment. We provide you with the skills and resources to become your best you physically as well as mentally and spiritually.
