The junior class and a selection of seniors traveled for a day to New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 13, 2018, to tour two Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The students departed the Piney Woods campus at 5:30 am for an exciting and enlightening day of learning. Arriving at their first destination, the students didn’t allow the rainy weather to dampen their enthusiasm.
At 10:00 am, at 2601 Gentilly Blvd., the students stepped onto the campus of Dillard University. Dillard is a private, historically black university, founded in 1930. This institution, founded after Piney Woods’ 1909, offered the students a glimpse into college life.
The day didn’t end at Dillard. After a brief lunch the students were transported to Xavier University of Louisiana. Xavier is also a liberal arts college and classified as historically black. Xavier is also the only historically black Roman Catholic institution of higher education in the United States. Xavier has the amazing distinction of sending more African American graduates to medical school than any other college in the United States.
